Many people use dog exercise pens for other uses besides exercising their pets. Sometimes dog owners need a place to put their dog where they know it will be safe and protected; a place where the pet can get some sun and even relieve itself. The exercise pen keeps the canine from running away or into the street where it can get hit by a car.
But the exercise pen is not a substitute for a walk around the block. Dogs need to go out for real exercise, and many pet owners can also benefit from a daily walk. Exercise is a must for dog and owner alike.
The pen is a great option for dogs when they are puppies. It is a good place to teach young dogs to relieve themselves outside in the yard rather than inside on the floor or carpet. There are many types of pens on the market. Pens come in various sizes and most snap together so they can be easily taken apart and stored when not in use.
People with large yards can buy two pens and put them together to form one large pen. The pen should be checked for exposed wires or screws. These can scratch or cut the dog.
The more expensive pens have an access door which makes it easier to move the pet in and out rather than having to step up and over the pen. The door should be locked on the outside to keep the dog from trying to flip the lock and escaping. People should buy a pen that is high enough to keep the dog in but not so high that owners cannot reach in to pet the canine.
The pen should have a support base so that the pet does not collapse it by jumping. The larger the dog, the more secure the support base has to be. This is common sense of course.

I have a dog exercise pen that I use for containing my little toy dogs in the kitchen while I’m at work. Its the North States Superyard XT Gate Play Yard. I love it, I’ve got 2 extra panels so its a total of 8 panels. A great product. Everyone in our small breed rescue group has one, and when we get together at various adoption events we all bring them and put our fosters in them.
